Weird navigation in the member portal to find registration button.

I spent quite a bit of time this afternoon putting a generic member account to the test, trying all the links and seeing what I could see.
Here's a strange thing I noticed. I saw an upcoming event in the member portal screen. (See picture 110.jpg) Great! I clicked on it and was taken to a general information page for that event. (Picture 111.jpg) This is the information published on the event. No place to register, though.
I clicked "back to full list" thinking it would take me to the portal page. Thought I'd be going "back." Instead I ended up at a full event list. (See picture 112.jpg) I wondered why I ended up here and clicked the name of the event I had been browsing to see what would happen. That took me to a general information page for the event that looks a lot like the first step (See picture 113.jpg), but instead there's this big fabulous registration button.
Man, I am pretty sure that this will be very hard for people to find. Getting our people to sign up for stuff is always a hurdle, and trying to talk them through this navigation doesn't seem like an easy path of adoption.
Ideally, there would be a little status button right after the event name in the list on the portal page. [Registered] or [Unregistered] or something like that, that is clickable and will change the registration state. That would require no clicking through screens at all. IF that's not possible, then the big registration button needs to appear on the first information screen that shows up when I click the event. And if that is the case, there probably needs to be some instructional text at the top of the events list that says something like "Click the event name for more information or to register.
At least that's the way it's looking to me. Hopefully this is helpful and not overly critical. Thanks for all your hard work!

Marc,
Thanks for this helpful post. I tested this out with a new test user account. When I clicked onto the CLI Meeting event in the upcoming event module block in the portal page, I saw the event page with the register button. I never was able to duplicate the error where the register button did not show for that event. It will only show up if you have set the event to track registrations.
I like the suggestion to have the upcoming event module listing to display to the user whether they have registered for registerable events. I'll add this upgrade.

Hi Marc,
I've made some changes. Tell me what you think.
Thanks,
Truman

I'm not seeing any changes, Truman. I signed into the member portal in Safari in my own account. It all looks the same. What ought I be seeing?

The reason why you weren't seeing any changes is that none of the events listed in the portal page had "track registrations" enabled. If they were, I put a "register for event" link at the bottom of the listing.
I just noticed some errors in the calender listing. This may be due to some incompatibilities between the current version of Ascribe and the changes I made. If I can't resolve this, I may have to undo the changes. If that's the case, they won't be available until the next system wide update which should be in a couple weeks.
